PEPPERELL -- The North Middlesex Regional School Committee is seeking individuals to serve on a Board of Trustees to govern a Commonwealth Virtual School.

The district submitted a letter of intent to open the virtual school on Aug. 16. If the application is approved by the School Committee, it will then go on to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

The Board of Trustees would be responsible for overseeing the operations of the school, which would serve students grades K-12 and would open in the fall of 2014, Landers said.

"The virtual school program enrollment will not focus on a specific population of students but will address the needs of diverse learners, providing a comprehensive educational experience for all students," Superintendent Joan Landers said in a statement.

A Commonwealth Virtual School features teachers and students who interact remotely through the Internet, according to the DESE website.

The school could serve gifted and talented students, students with social and emotional needs that make it difficult for them to attend traditional schools and students who seek coursework not available at their school, according to Landers.

Students enrolled in the virtual school would be welcome to participate in any extracurricular activities offered by the district.

The school district is seeking individuals with areas of expertise in technology, education, finance, business, law, government and other areas to serve on the board.

Interested applicants should send a statement of interest and a resume to Landers by noon on Oct. 4.

At an Aug. 26 School Committee meeting, member Brian Edmonds said the virtual school could help make North Middlesex "the place to be for education."

Opening the virtual school is one of three main goals that Landers identified for this school year. The other two are continuing work on the North Middlesex Regional High School building project and using data to improve instruction throughout the school district.

She also said she hopes to open a public day school for special needs students and implement an international baccalaureate program at the high school.
