TOWNSEND -- The Townsend Military Band will conclude its 2013 Thursday evening concert season on Aug. 29.

Area residents are invited to attend the 7:30-9:30 p.m. concert on the Townsend Common, which will be funded by the Amanda E. Dwight Entertainment Fund.

Townsend VFW Post 6538 and its Auxiliaries will host the lawn party to be held in conjunction with the Aug. 29 concert.

The aroma of grilled onions and peppers will fill the air as VFW Post members grill hot dogs, hamburgers and sausages for hungry concertgoers. Corn dogs, homemade potato chips and fried dough will be available for purchase as will a variety of cold soda and bottled water will be offered for sale.

Food and beverages will be available from 6:45-9:15 p.m.

A wide selection of homemade cookies, squares, cakes, breads, candies and pies may be purchased from Townsend VFW Ladies Auxiliary members to eat while listening to the concert or take home.

There will be numerous activities for children at the lawn party including basketball and baseball toss games, as well as an opportunity for them to do sand and spin art crafts, and have their faces painted.

The 2013-2014 Department of Massachusetts Ladies Auxiliary VFW cancer pins will be offered for sale with proceeds to benefit Cancer Aid and Research Centers and provide monetary grants to cancer-stricken VFW Ladies Auxiliary members.

Townsend Bandstand tiles will also be available to buy.

Concertgoers of all ages will have an opportunity to win stuffed animals and a patriotic money hat. A Chinese auction featuring a quilted wallhanging, a handmade bride doll, a crocheted afghan and pillow set, a patriotic beanie bear and a Limited Edition Crayola 50th Birthday 64 Crayon Box with Commemorative Tin will be set up on the common.

The Townsend Military Band will open its concert at 7:30 p.m. by playing a fanfare and the "Belgian Paratroopers" march by Leemans. "Elsa's Procession" by Wagner, "Buglers' Holiday" by Anderson and the "American Civil War Fantasy" by Bilik will be performed.

Shostakovich's "Galop," Verdi's "La Forya Destino," Osser's "Italian Festival" and the "Valdres March" by Hanssen will be included in the first portion of the program.

Following intermission, the band will play Sousa's "Nobles of the Mystic Shrine" and the "Phantom of the Opera." The "William Tell Overture," "Stars And Stripes Forever," and "America, the Beautiful," will be performed before the Townsend Military Band concludes its concert at 9:30 by playing the "Star Spangled Banner."
