At the typical auto show, many concept cars are less about wild automotive fantasy and more about providing a thinly disguised hint to whet appetites for the next generation of production vehicles.

But there are still places for designers and engineers to do some dreaming, and to encourage car enthusiasts to dream along with them.

One such gathering is the annual Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, where aftermarket product producers and original-equipment automakers are encouraged to get wild and even wacky.

And thus, the "Velocity," a car based on the Hyundai Veloster, a sporty three-door coupe.

The Velocity is the Hyundai Design and Technology Center's answer to the question, "What if?"

What if the designers and engineers at the Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) were allowed to push the Veloster envelope to its extreme --and not just via a set of two-dimensional drawings, but in full-scale, 3-D form?

Or, to put it another way, let's start with a turbocharged Veloster and turn it into the ultimate weekend track-day vehicle.

To turn the Veloster into the Velocity, the designers at HATCI sketched up a unique body kit and then worked with various vendors to produce such components as an integrated front spoiler, lift-reducing rear diffuser, front and rear brake airflow ducts, aero side skirt lips, and an "oversized" rear wing spoiler -- and all of it painted up to look like a road-going race car.

Inside that new bodywork, they installed a CPR Fabrications integrated roll bar, Katzkin custom suede leather seating in raven and scarlet with red stitching, a Race-Keeper video GPS and data-acquisition system, and provided Sparco racing helmets, driving gloves, shoes and special seat belts.

They also selected a set of HRE P40 Model 19x9 lightweight satin charcoal-finished wheels, which the HATCI engineers wrapped with 275/35R19 Kumho Ecsta SPT high-performance tires.

The engineers also installed Brembo brakes -- 350x28mm two-piece rotors and four-piston calipers -- as well as a set of Bilstein monotube shocks and springs.

Those modifications were needed to deal with the way the Veloster's 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine was tweaked: Cosworth and Indent components, including pistons, rods, turbo, intercooler, intake manifold, fuel system and engine management software, and a CPR Fabrication custom exhaust.

The result of such powertrain changes: Instead of the standard 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, Velocity lives up to its name with 400 horsepower and 350 ground-pounding feet of torque.

Sorry, sports fans, the body kit is not something you can order from your Hyundai dealer's parts department. But don't be surprised if some aftermarket producer becomes inspired by the Velocity package and offers similar fascia, rocker and wing components for your Veloster.

And the HRE wheels, Kuhmo tires, Brembo brakes and Bilstein suspension components all are available.

Now, all you need to do is to convince Cosworth and Indent work their magic on your engine.
